Encourage Your Children to Enjoy Reading at Home and While Traveling

Travel and reading go hand in hand.

Although they are separate activities, they enhance each other. Both expand the mind and benefit our health.

If you enjoy traveling, chances are you're doing your best to impose that love in your children. But do you do the same with reading? One of the most important ways to support your children's learning and mental health is to encourage a love of books. Reading is another activity that can be done on the go with the help of phones, tablets, and e-readers.

Here are 5 top tips to help you encourage a love of reading in our children:

1. BE PASSIONATE ABOUT READING

If you love books and are excited about reading them, your children will want to read more. I understand that this isn't always possible, but children replicate the adults around them. So, if you can sit down and read a book, your children will follow in your footsteps.

Make a big deal out of the arrival of a new book so that your child is excited to read it. Signing up for a book subscription is a great way to create that excitement, as the postman delivers a new 'present' every month. If that isn't possible, make it a monthly treat to go out and look for a new book together.

Make books visible and easy to find. Your child should be able to select a book at any time. A basket of books next to their toys or limited bookshelves with books will encourage children to pick up a book instead of the iPad throughout the day.

If you are concerned that your child will rip the books, purchase material or thick board books. To be honest, sticky tape can always be used to repair a ripped page.

2. START EARLY, DO IT OFTEN, AND NEVER STOP

It is never too early to begin reading to your children. It is essential to begin reading to our children at a young age, as even the youngest babies will find comfort in hearing your voice as you read a story. Make reading a part of your daily routine by making time for it every day. Reading to your children on a daily basis will set them on the path to becoming lifelong readers. This does not, however, limit reading to bedtime or when a reading book is sent home from school.

We shouldn't stop reading to our older children just because they can read to themselves. Reading to your older children is not only educational, but it is also a great way to spend quality time together.

3. WITH YOUR CHILDREN, EXPLORE WORDLESS BOOKS

Being a reader requires far more than simply being able to read words on a page. Long before they can read words on a page, children learn to read images and retell stories. Wordless books are ideal for children of all ages; older children can work on their comprehension and storytelling skills, while younger children can focus on the illustrations and retell the story based on what they see.

These kinds of books will boost a child's reading confidence. There are some fantastic wordless picture books available that are works of art and do not appear to be too young.

Picture books are never too old for you or your children. There is a false belief that picture books are only for younger children, but there are many picture books written for older children.

Picture books not only encourage pleasure reading, but they are also an excellent way to address sensitive and complex issues such as mental health, conflict, and self-esteem.

This is because reading a picture book with your child will inspire interesting discussions as you both interpret the text and illustrations.

4. MAKE STORIES COME TO LIFE

You can accomplish this by using entertaining voices and changing your tone to match the story. Stories can also serve as excellent inspiration for small world play and craft activities. The book can come to life by creating activities that are related to it, allowing children to strengthen their understanding of the story and, as a result, their love of it. Read various settings. Reading should not be limited to the couch or bed. Another wonderful way to bring stories to life is to read in unusual places that correspond to the setting in the story.

If you're reading a book about a tomb gnome, make a cave in your living room and read the story there. If you're reading a book set in the woods, find a shady spot under a tree to read with your kids in the great outdoors.

5. Find A Happy Form Of Media Between What They Like And Introducing Something New

When selecting books, consider their interests. If your child enjoys trains, dinosaurs, or fairies, read stories about them. Read large books to captivate your children and expose them to a diverse vocabulary. If you don't have time to read large books, a book subscription will do the necessary work for you.

If your child does not like storybooks, try magazines, comic books, and nonfiction books.

These types of books are great for drawing children in with their illustrations, feature is especially useful, and facts. Book subscriptions can also help with this by sending different types of books each month so that you and your children can try something new.
