1. PRIORITIZE REAL FOOD

These are common inquiries I've received over the years. Given the demands on our time and money, as well as all of the involved in a process and confusing information out there, feeding our families healthy, real food can be difficult.

This is not to say that junk food and convenience foods should be avoided on occasion. If there's one thing I've learned about being a more mindful grocery shopper, it's that balance is everything!

Here are a few tips to help you discover the grocery store and prepare to eat as naturally as possible:

  • Stock up on whole, unprocessed foods like vegetables, fruits, beans, grains, and nuts, as well as minimally processed meat, seafood, and dairy.

  • Shop the border of the grocery store and avoid the junk food lane.

  • Buy organic whenever possible.

  • Read labels to avoid the most dangerous preservatives and food additives.

  • If you must consume processed foods, choose those made with a limited number of real food ingredients.

  • Make your own meals.

  • Make homemade versions of commonly purchased packaged foods such as cookies, oatmeal, and spice mixes.

2. USE NATURAL, NON-TOXIC PRODUCTS

The main issue with all of the manufactured and processed products that we use every day is that they are made with chemicals that can harm both humans and the environment.

Here are some replacements you can make to replace toxic products with safe natural products:

  • Food storage containers, bottles, cutting boards, and other household items made of glass, wood, and metal rather than plastic.

  • Instead of toxic nonstick cookware, use nonstick cookware made of cast iron, stainless steel, or ceramic.

  • Clothing, bed linens, and table linens made from organic cotton, bamboo, wool, and other natural fibers rather than polyester and chemical-laden fabrics.

  • Shampoo, deodorant, and makeup free of preservatives, sulfates, artificial fragrances, and other potentially harmful chemicals.

  • Laundry and household cleaners made with safe, environmentally friendly ingredients.

  • Furniture, mattresses, and floor coverings manufactured without the use of harmful flame retardants, formaldehyde, or other off-gassing chemicals.

  • Use natural health remedies instead of pharmaceuticals.

  • DIY – create your own homemade cleaning and beauty products.

3. MAKE AWARENESS, ECO-FRIENDLY DECISIONS

Most of us grew up in a culture of plenty. We have enough food to go around, enough water to drink, and enough heat to keep us toasty warm. We are extremely fortunate, but the downside is that we are wasteful. When we brush our teeth, we leave the water running. We throw perfectly edible food away. We buy clothes that we don't need. This excess culture is harmful to the environment.

Here are some simple changes you can make to reduce your environmental impact:

  • Replace disposable items with reusable ones.

  • Water conservation.

  • Manage your home's energy usage with a remote control, light timers, weather-stripping, and other tools.

  • Repurpose – make storage containers out of spaghetti sauce jars or yogurt tubs, or make rags out of old t-shirts.

  • Grow some of your own food, whether it's a vegetable garden or a couple pots of herbs in containers.

  • Compost food scraps to create healthy garden soil.

  • Recycle everything you possibly can.

  • To reduce packaging, buy in bulk and refill containers.

  • Eat seasonally and locally to save money on transportation and storage.

  • Instead of driving everywhere, walk or ride your bike – get outside and enjoy nature!
